Can Acrobat search inside many PDFs on a phone?

Last reviewed: October 3, 2026 · Markdown version

Not as a word search, going by Adobe's own mobile help. Acrobat's Search on a phone looks through the PDF you have open. What Adobe documents for working across many files on a phone is a different kind of tool: PDF Spaces, where you add files and ask an AI assistant questions about them. If your question is "which of my PDFs contains this exact word, and on which page?", that is an index's job, and the last section describes one. We make DocFind, so weigh that section accordingly; its limits are listed in it.

What Acrobat does well on a phone

Start with what it is for. Adobe's App Store listing describes an app to "View, share, annotate, add comments, and sign documents - all in one app", with form filling and signing free ("Adobe Fill & Sign is free & available in Acrobat Reader"). Among its paid features it lists text recognition, which "turns scanned PDFs into searchable, editable text to use in other formats", plus editing, merging and converting (Acrobat Reader: PDF Editor, App Store listing, read 3 October 2026). For working on a document, that is a broad toolkit, and nothing below suggests replacing it.

What Acrobat's mobile Search does

Adobe's mobile page is short. "Open the PDF and select Search from the top menu", type the term, and "Use navigation arrows in the top-right corner to see all occurrences of the search term in the document" (Find text in PDFs in Acrobat on mobile, Adobe, read 3 October 2026). The unit is one open document. Adobe's mobile FAQ lists the same scope among the free app's basics, "Search for text within documents", alongside opening, annotating, filling and signing (Acrobat on mobile FAQ, Adobe, read 3 October 2026). Your phone's own file search does not cover the gap either: Apple's Files app asks you to "Enter a filename, folder name, or document type in the search field" (Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone, read 3 October 2026), which finds a file by its label, not by a sentence inside it. On a computer it is a different story: desktop Acrobat has an Advanced Search across a folder of PDFs, covered on our Adobe Reader page.

Across many files: PDF Spaces

Adobe's page on AI features in the mobile app says "PDF Spaces allows you to work with AI insights across multiple files from a single space", and that you can "Ask AI‑powered questions across collections of PDFs and related files" and "Get consolidated, source‑linked answers from multiple documents". On access, the same page says "Free users get a limited number of AI Assistant requests, while full access is available with subscriptions, such as the AI Assistant add‑on for eligible plans" (AI capabilities in Acrobat on mobile, Adobe, read 3 October 2026). You build a Space by adding content, and Adobe's options include "Upload files from your device" and "Upload files from Adobe cloud storage or from the other supported storage" (Create PDF Spaces in Acrobat on mobile, Adobe, read 3 October 2026).

That is a useful tool for a different question. An AI answer with citations tells you what the documents say about something; it is not the same as a list of every page where a word appears. The two Adobe pages above do not say whether a Space can return every occurrence of a term, or whether it works without a connection, so do not assume either.

Scanned PDFs in Acrobat on a phone

A scan has no text to search until it is recognised. Adobe's mobile page on editing scans gives the steps for iOS: "Open the scanned file in Acrobat on iOS", then "Tap More tools > Recognize text" (Edit scanned files, Acrobat Mobile Help, read 3 October 2026). It is one file at a time, and the page is written for the iOS app only.

DocFind (ours): an index for the whole folder

DocFind does the word-search version of the job. It searches inside many PDFs at once, each result showing the file, the page and the text around the match, and a tap opens that PDF at that exact page with your keywords highlighted. Scanned PDFs are read on the phone and then searched like the rest; matches found that way are labelled, and pages that could not be made searchable are reported. If a file cannot be opened, has not been read yet, or has changed since it was indexed, DocFind says which ones and why.

Searching, indexing, reading scanned pages and exporting all work with no internet connection, and your documents never leave your device. You do not need an account, and there are no ads, no analytics and no tracking. It is on iPhone and Android.

Reasons it may not suit you:

  • It does not edit. Annotating, signing and filling forms stay with Acrobat or whichever reader you use.
  • It answers "where", not "what does it mean". There is no AI summary; you get the matching pages and read them yourself.
  • PDFs only. Word, Excel and plain-text files are not indexed.
  • Plain matching. No stemming: searching for "running" won't find "run". On Android a completed search matches word beginnings, so "run" would also list "running".
  • Print, not handwriting. On Android, scanned pages are read for Latin-script print only, and scanned Hindi or other Devanagari pages do not become searchable on either platform.
  • The index stays on one phone. A second phone builds its own.
  • A capped free tier. Free covers one library of up to 25 documents, 10 scanned pages and 10 exports every month, with unlimited keywords and results. The two platforms are priced differently; see the homepage.

Using them together

The two can share a phone without friction: DocFind to find which file and which page, then Acrobat to sign, fill or mark up the page once you are on it. If you have only a handful of PDFs and do not mind opening them one by one, Acrobat's own Search is all you need.
