# What are some examples of legal documents? — DocFind

**"Legal document" is not a category of paper, it is a category of consequence: a document that creates, records or proves an obligation.** Below are the kinds most people already own without thinking of them that way. This is a plain description of common document types, not legal advice — for anything that matters, a qualified professional in your jurisdiction is the right reader, not a web page.

## Documents that create an obligation

- **Contracts and agreements** — employment, freelance, service, non-disclosure, partnership.
- **Leases and tenancy agreements**, plus their inventories and deposit schedules.
- **Loan and finance agreements** — mortgage, car finance, credit agreements.
- **Terms of service** you accepted, including the ones nobody read.

## Documents that prove a fact

- **Identity and civil records** — birth, marriage, name change.
- **Titles and deeds** — property, vehicle registration.
- **Certificates and licences** — qualifications, professional registration, insurance certificates.
- **Tax filings and assessments**, and the receipts behind them.

## Documents that direct what happens next

- **Wills, and powers of attorney.**
- **Insurance policies**, whose schedule of cover is the part that decides claims.
- **Court and official correspondence** — notices, orders, judgments.

## The practical problem they all share

Legal documents are long, and the part you need is one clause. Nobody reads a lease to find the notice period; they look for the word "notice". Three things then get in the way:

- **Many of them are scans.** A page signed on paper and then scanned is a photograph of that paper. It holds no searchable text until something reads the image, which is why a find-in-page on a signed contract so often returns nothing at all. - **The set matters more than the file.** A tenancy is the agreement plus the inventory plus two years of letters. The answer is in the set, and searching one file at a time is how the amendment gets missed.
- **Some carry a password, and there are two different kinds.** The qpdf project's documentation explains it: PDF encryption was designed around "a user password and an owner password", and a file made with an empty user password opens without asking — "the empty string is used to retrieve the encryption key, making the file usable, but a conforming reader restricts certain operations from the user" ([*qpdf: PDF Encryption*](https://qpdf.readthedocs.io/en/stable/encryption.html), read 23 September 2026). That kind reads, indexes and searches like any other document. A real user password is the one demanded before the file will open at all, and that is the kind that genuinely blocks a search. ## Keeping them where you can find them

One folder, names that say what the document is rather than when it was scanned, and — for anything irreplaceable — a second copy somewhere that is not the same device. None of that is clever; all of it is what makes the difference at the moment you need the document rather than the moment you filed it.

## Where DocFind fits

[DocFind](https://docfindapp.com/) searches inside a whole folder of PDFs at once and shows the file, the page and the surrounding text for each match, so a clause arrives with enough context to know it is the right one. Tapping a result opens that document at that page with your keywords highlighted. Scanned pages are read on your device — nothing is uploaded — and then searched like any other document, with those matches labelled and any page it could not read reported rather than skipped.

Two limits worth stating on this subject in particular. It matches the exact words you type, not related ones, so it is worth trying the synonyms a lawyer would use. And your documents never leave your device, which for the contents of a household's legal folder is the point rather than a feature.
