How do I find course materials on D2L Brightspace?

Last reviewed: October 14, 2026 · Markdown version

In your course, select Content in the navigation bar. D2L's learner guide says the Table of Contents there "lists all units, lessons, and activities", and you click a unit to open it. If Content looks empty or a module you expect is not there, the usual reason is a date or condition your instructor set, not a fault in your account. D2L notes that a course can show Content in one of three layouts, so the screen you see may differ from a classmate's in another course. Everything here is from D2L's own Brightspace documentation, read today.

Three layouts, one Content link

D2L names them: "Learner Experience", "Content Experience" and "Classic Content", and says which one you see depends "on your organization or course" (Navigate course content in the Learner Experience or in the Content Experience, D2L Brightspace Community, read 14 October 2026). The Content Experience is the one with "the Table of Contents on the left and content on the right"; D2L's tell for it is that side-by-side layout with colour-coded units.

Working through the Table of Contents

In the Learner Experience, D2L's steps on the same page are:

  • "Select Content from your course navigation bar."
  • Click a unit or lesson name to expand it and see its topics and activities.
  • "If your course has many modules, click Load More at the bottom of the Table of Contents to display the rest of the available content." A long course can look shorter than it is until you do.
  • Click Launch Unit or Launch Lesson to see the description and topics, then use Previous and Next to step through, or Back to Content to return.

The same page says you "can open any available module without following a specific sequence", and that there is a Print or Download option "to continue studying your content offline", with one warning: "Content in unexpanded accordions is not printed." Expand the sections you want first.

Why a module or file is missing

D2L's troubleshooting page describes the exact symptom: "When you click Content, the Content page may appear empty and display only the search bar." It gives three causes. The course has not started yet; the content is hidden; or "The content’s release conditions are not met", with D2L's own example: "a learner must pass “Quiz A” before they are able to view “Module B”." A topic you can see but not open "has a start date that has not yet passed or is associated with an end date that already passed" (Troubleshoot missing course content, D2L Brightspace Community, read 14 October 2026). In each case D2L's advice is to ask your instructor, and to check the syllabus for release conditions. In the Content Experience, D2L adds that topics outside their dates are either hidden from the Table of Contents or shown but unavailable (the Navigate course content page above).

Downloading a file to keep

From the troubleshooting page: "Click on the content page that you want to download. At the top of the page, click the Download icon." In Classic Content the Download button is at the bottom of the page instead. It is permission-dependent: "If you do not have the permissions to download content, the Download button will not display." So a missing button is a course setting, not something you can switch on.

On your phone: the Brightspace Pulse app

D2L's Pulse guide says the Courses tab shows "the courses you are currently enrolled in" and their content, and lists the file types it opens, PDF among them, with "special features such as password protection" unsupported. It can also keep a PDF or MP4 for offline use: open the topic file, then from the ellipsis menu tap "Make available offline". Note the catch D2L states plainly: such files "can only be accessed in Brightspace Pulse. Although these files use the mobile device's storage, they cannot be opened in another app or transferred from the mobile device" (View courses and course content in Brightspace Pulse, D2L Brightspace Community, read 14 October 2026). That page is filed under D2L's K-12 student documentation; it does not say whether a university's Pulse behaves differently.

Searching what you have collected

None of the D2L pages above describes searching the text inside course files; the Content search bar is mentioned only as what an empty page shows. Our suggestion: once you have downloaded a term's PDFs through the Download option, keep them in one folder per course, because the files Pulse keeps offline stay locked inside Pulse. If you are on Canvas in another course, the Canvas version of this page covers Modules and Files there.

For the downloaded PDFs, DocFind on iPhone or Android searches inside many PDFs at once, and each result shows the file, the page, and the surrounding text, so a term's readings can be checked for one word before an exam. Photocopied handouts saved as PDFs are read on your device and then searched like the typed ones. It reads PDFs only, so a slide deck that arrives as a PowerPoint file needs saving as a PDF first; searching lecture notes and scanned handouts covers that sorting step.
