How do I search for documents by date?
Last reviewed: October 15, 2026 · Markdown version
It depends where the documents are. The iPhone Files app sorts by date but does not take a date in its search box; Files by Google on Android can filter a search by date; Google Drive goes furthest, with a Modified filter and before: and after: operators. One distinction before you start: all of these work on the date a file was saved or changed, which is not always the date printed on the document. That second kind of date is covered at the end.
iPhone: the Files app
Apple's instructions for re-ordering a folder: from an open location or folder, tap the More button and "Choose an option: Name, Kind, Date, Size, or Tags." For the most recent things, "To view recently opened files, tap Recents." The search field is described differently: you "Enter a filename, folder name, or document type", and you can narrow it to Recents or to one location or tag (Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone, iPhone User Guide, read 15 October 2026). The page does not mention a date filter in search, so on iPhone the practical method is to open the folder you think the file is in, sort by Date, and scroll to the month you remember.
Android: Files by Google
Google's search page for the app has a one-line tip that answers the question: "You can also filter by file type and/or date." Tap the selected filter again to remove it (Search for a file, Files by Google Help, read 15 October 2026). The page does not list which date ranges the filter offers, so expect the choices on your own phone to decide how precise you can be. To browse rather than search, Google's viewing page says to tap More at the top right, then Sort by, and choose File name, Date or Size; the Recents section shows "your recently added, downloaded, and modified files" (View your files, Files by Google Help, read 15 October 2026). Samsung and other makers ship their own file managers, and their menus are not covered by Google's pages.
Google Drive: the most precise option
In the Drive app, Google says that typing in Search in Drive brings up filter chips "to narrow your search by Type, People, Date Modified, and more" (Search for files in Google Drive (Android), Google Drive Help, read 15 October 2026). For exact dates, the advanced search table gives two pairs of operators, with the date written as YYYY-MM-DD (Search for files in Google Drive (Computer), Google Drive Help, read 15 October 2026):
beforeandafter: "Find items modified before or after a certain date", for exampleafter:2021-05-01.createdbeforeandcreatedafter: "Find items created before or after a certain date".
Our example of putting them together: type:pdf after:2025-03-31 before:2025-05-01 invoice asks for PDFs modified in April 2025 that mention invoice. On drive.google.com you can also click a column header to sort results by that column, since Google notes that results are otherwise "automatically sorted by relevance" (the computer page above). Google also warns that "Not all examples work on all devices", so the website is the safer place for operators.
When the date you remember is printed inside the document
A file's modified date is often the day you downloaded it, not the date on the invoice, letter or statement. If what you remember is the bill from March, sorting by date can send you to the wrong month. In that case, search for the words of the date as the document prints it. Drive's search reads file contents, and Files by Google's Smart Search can match "Text from images and .pdf" where it is available (the Search for a file page above).
For PDFs on your phone, DocFind does this across a whole library at once: it searches inside many PDFs, scanned ones included, and shows the file, the page and the surrounding text for each match. It matches the words you type and does not guess other spellings of them, so search for March 2025 if that is how your statements write it, and try 03/2025 separately if some use numbers. It works offline, on iPhone and Android, and reads PDFs only.
