How long does it take to OCR a PDF?
Last reviewed: September 23, 2026 · Markdown version
It depends on four things, and page count is only one of them. OCR is image processing: the work grows with how many pages there are, how large and clean each page image is, how fast the device doing it is, and whether the recognition runs locally or on a server you are queuing for.
The four factors, in the order they usually matter
- Pages. The obvious one: every page is its own image to recognise, so more pages means more work.
- Image size and quality. A 600 dpi colour scan is a far bigger image than a 200 dpi grayscale one. Google's guidance for its ML Kit recogniser is blunt about the trade: "Smaller images can be processed faster", while "Poor image focus can affect text recognition accuracy" (Recognize text in images with ML Kit on Android, read 23 September 2026).
- How thorough the engine is asked to be. Apple's Vision offers a fast path and an accurate one, and says of the second: "Accurate text recognition takes more time to produce a more comprehensive result" (VNRequestTextRecognitionLevel.accurate, read 23 September 2026).
- Local or remote. Cloud OCR adds upload time, queue time and download time to the recognition itself — and puts your document on someone else's machine on the way.
The device matters on top of all four: the same pages take longer on slower hardware.
Why we publish no number for our own app
Because any number we gave you would be measured on our device with our test files, and yours are different on every count above. A speed claim that holds on a new phone with clean scans and fails on a three-year-old one with photographed pages is not a fact, it is an advertisement. So we describe the shape of the cost and leave the stopwatch to you.
What we will say is where the time goes: it is one-time work. A page is recognised once, the recognised words are stored, and from then on it is searched like any other document. The cost is paid at indexing, not at every search.
The practical limit most people meet first
Not time — budget. In DocFind's free tier you can make 10 scanned pages searchable per month, alongside one library of up to 25 documents and 10 exports a month, which is enough to find out whether the app suits your library before deciding anything. Pro removes those limits. Prices differ between the App Store and Google Play, so the one place we quote them is the pricing section on our homepage rather than a page like this one that could quietly go stale.
What OCR cannot do, however long you wait
Time does not fix accuracy. Handwriting is not something to count on, blurred or stamped-over text stays hard, and a misread stores the wrong word — so a search for the right spelling will miss it. The honest version of that question. DocFind labels which matches came from OCR and tells you which pages it could not make searchable, so a silent failure never looks like an empty document.
