How do I open a Word document on my phone without Word?
Last reviewed: October 29, 2026 · Markdown version
Two other editors read Word files without Microsoft's app: Google Docs on either platform, and Pages on an iPhone. Both open the file in place, and both can save it back as a Word file afterwards, so the person who sent it never needs to know. The short version:
| App | Phones | Opens | Saves back as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Docs (or the Drive app) | Android and iPhone | .doc (newer than Office 95), .docx | .docx |
| Pages | iPhone | .doc, .docx, .rtf, .txt | Pages, Word, PDF or EPUB |
| Files app Quick Look | iPhone | Apple documents images and PDFs | Nothing; it only previews |
Google Docs: open it as it is, or convert it
Google's help describes two ways of working. The first keeps the file a Word file: "To open and edit Office files, you can use Office Compatibility Mode (OCM). With OCM, you can open and edit Office files in Drive, the Docs, Sheets, and Slides homescreens & apps, and Gmail." On a phone that mode is built in, in Google's words "OCM is automatically included with the Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps" (Work with Office files, Google Docs Editors Help, Android, read 29 October 2026). So a .docx attachment in the Gmail app, or a file in Drive, opens for editing without a conversion step.
The second turns it into a Google Doc, which Google suggests "If you want to work with others on a file in real-time". The steps on iPhone: open the file, tap More, tap the question mark next to "Office Compatibility Mode", then "Tap Save as Google Docs" (Work with Office files, Google Docs Editors Help, iPhone & iPad, read 29 October 2026). On Android the More button sits next to the file in the list instead. Converting has a cost Google lists itself: macros are not carried over, and "Embedded charts and videos in Word and PowerPoint files will be converted to images". To return it, Google's route is "Save as Word", or Share & export, then Send a copy, then Word.
Pages on iPhone
Apple's Pages guide says "You can also open and edit Microsoft Word documents (files with a .doc or .docx filename extension) and text documents (files with a .rtf or .txt filename extension) in Pages, then save them as Pages or Word documents, or in PDF or EPUB formats." Two things can look wrong the first time. A file someone sent you "may open in reading view", where you can read but not change it until you tap Edit. And a document that uses fonts the phone lacks shows "a missing font notification" at the top of the page; tapping it, then Resolve Font Warnings, then Resolve, swaps in fonts you have (Open a document in Pages on iPhone, Pages User Guide, read 29 October 2026). The swap changes how the page looks, not what it says.
Just looking: what the Files app promises
If all you need is to read the thing once, a preview may do. Apple's Files guide describes Quick Look narrowly: "You can preview an image file or a PDF in Quick Look." The same page adds a broader note, "If you haven’t installed the app that created a file, a preview of the file opens in Quick Look", but it does not say how a Word file will look in that preview (Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone, iPhone User Guide, read 29 October 2026). Try it; if the layout comes out wrong, open the file in Pages or Docs instead. To pick the app yourself, touch and hold the file and "Choose Open With from the menu, then choose an option" (same page). Google's getting-started page for Files by Google does not mention Word files at all (How to use Files by Google, Files by Google Help, read 29 October 2026), so on Android the Docs or Drive app is the documented route.
Finding a word once it is open
Each of these apps has its own find command, in a different menu. Searching in Google Docs and searching in Pages give the steps for each, and finding a word in any document covers Word itself for when you do install it.
A note on our own app, since this is its site: DocFind does not open Word files. It reads PDFs only, so a Word document needs saving as a PDF first, which Pages can do, before DocFind can search it.
