# Why won't a PDF open from WhatsApp? — DocFind

Start by working out which of three stages failed: the document never finished downloading, it downloaded but nothing on the phone would open it, or it opened and asked for a password. WhatsApp's own troubleshooting article covers all three, and its phone editions differ from the WhatsApp Web one in a way that explains most of the confusion.

## Stage 1: it has not downloaded yet
WhatsApp counts documents as media, and its article on media problems opens with the most likely culprit: "If you can’t download, open, or send media files, the most common reason why is a weak internet connection." Its first fixes are to restart the phone, update WhatsApp and the phone, and "Try connecting to mobile data if you're on Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi if you're on mobile data" ([*Can’t download, open, or send media files*, WhatsApp Help Center, Android edition](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1096027074615511/?cms_platform=android), read 29 October 2026).

A document may also simply not have been fetched. WhatsApp's auto-download settings cover "photos, voice messages, videos, and documents", and on iPhone the Never setting means "You will need to manually tap each file to download it" ([*How to configure auto-download*, WhatsApp Help Center, iPhone edition](https://faq.whatsapp.com/366146522333492/?cms_platform=iphone), read 29 October 2026). The settings live under Storage and data on both phones. So tap the document in the chat once and wait for it to finish before deciding it is broken.

If the message itself shows "Waiting for this message. This may take a while." in place of the file, the problem is the message, not the PDF. WhatsApp lists the causes as a failed delivery, a recent reinstall by you or the sender, an out-of-date app on either side, or a new phone with the same number, and its first suggestion is to "Ask the sender to open WhatsApp and make sure you're both online at the same time" ([*About "Waiting for this message. This may take a while."*, WhatsApp Help Center](https://faq.whatsapp.com/general/26000015), read 29 October 2026).

## Stage 2: it downloaded, but will not open
This is the part people do not expect. On a phone, WhatsApp's article treats opening a PDF as another app's job. Under "Can’t open PDF", both the Android and the iPhone editions say: "Make sure you have a PDF reader installed on your phone. Without a PDF reader, you won't be able to open a downloaded PDF file." The other two steps are to confirm you have permission to view a password-protected file and to turn the phone off and on again (the *Can’t download, open, or send media files* article, Android and [iPhone](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1096027074615511/?cms_platform=iphone) editions, read 29 October 2026).

The WhatsApp Web edition of the same article reads differently: there, "PDFs open in a full-screen preview directly in WhatsApp", the preview "is powered by Adobe Acrobat", and "PDF preview requires an active connection" ([*Can’t download, open, or send media files*, WhatsApp Help Center, Web edition](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1096027074615511/?cms_platform=web), read 29 October 2026). Neither phone edition mentions an in-app preview, so advice written for the computer version does not carry over.

**On Android**, the phone needs an app registered to open PDFs. Which one that is, and how to change it, is on [the default PDF reader for Android](https://docfindapp.com/answers/the-default-pdf-reader-for-android).

**On iPhone**, once the file is saved to the Files app you can choose the reader yourself: Apple's steps are "Touch and hold the file you want to open. Choose Open With from the menu, then choose an option", and Quick Look will "preview an image file or a PDF" ([*Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-and-view-files-and-folders-iphe4bff8827/ios), read 29 October 2026).

## Android only: permissions and the SD card
The Android edition adds two causes the iPhone one does not. First, permissions: "WhatsApp needs permission to access your phone’s storage and media files. Without this permission, you won’t be able to download, save, or send photos, videos, and documents." The route is Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, and for documents specifically "tap Files and select Allow"; WhatsApp warns that the names vary, and you might see "Files and media" or "Storage" instead. Second, the memory card: check it has "Enough storage space" and that "Read-only mode is turned off", because "your SD card might be corrupted and need to be reformatted or replaced" (the Android edition above).

## iPhone only: after restoring a backup
If you recently moved to a new iPhone, the iPhone edition says WhatsApp "might still be restoring your media in the background", and that question marks or blank boxes in Media, Links, and Docs "might mean that the media was not properly backed-up to iCloud", in which case "the media can’t be recovered through this backup" (the iPhone edition above). The fix then is the sender, not your phone: ask them to send it again.

## Stage 3: it asks for a password
WhatsApp's only line on this is to "confirm that you have permissions to view the file". If the file asks for a password before it shows anything, the sender is the person who has it. [Why a PDF will not open](https://docfindapp.com/answers/why-wont-my-pdf-open) separates a password that stops the file opening from one that only restricts printing or copying, and [a forgotten PDF password](https://docfindapp.com/answers/forgot-the-password-to-a-pdf) covers what can and cannot be done.

## What WhatsApp's pages do not cover
None of the WhatsApp articles cited on this page (the media, auto-download, "Waiting for this message" and sharing articles, all read 29 October 2026) says how long an undownloaded document stays available, or what message appears when it no longer is, so we give no figure. If a document you never opened refuses to download weeks later, asking the sender to send it again is the reliable fix. On the sending side, WhatsApp's Android sharing article sets the ceiling: "For documents, the maximum file size allowed is 2 GB" ([*How to send media, contacts, or location*, WhatsApp Help Center, Android edition](https://faq.whatsapp.com/453914586839706/?cms_platform=android), read 29 October 2026).
