Start with the view. Microsoft lists the layouts from Extra large icons down to Details, Tiles and Content, and notes that "Different layouts either display thumbnails of your files or standard icons based on file types" ([*Use a screen reader to explore and navigate File Explorer in Windows*](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/use-a-screen-reader-to-explore-and-navigate-file-explorer-in-windows), read 28 September 2026). So if a folder shows only generic PDF icons, a larger icon layout is the first thing to try.
For a proper look at the page, turn on the preview pane. In File Explorer the shortcut is Alt+P, which Microsoft describes as "Show or hide the preview pane" ([*Keyboard shortcuts in Windows*](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows/keyboard-shortcuts-in-windows), read 28 September 2026). Click a PDF once and its first page appears on the right. That shortcut page does not say which file types the pane can render, or whether a PDF preview depends on the PDF app you have installed — it is silent on both, so if the pane stays blank for PDFs only, the app that handles PDFs on your PC is the likeliest place to look.
## Windows: "The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer"If a PDF you downloaded shows that message instead of a page, it is working as designed. Microsoft's support note says that "Starting with Windows security updates released on and after October 14, 2025, File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files downloaded from the internet", and that preview "is disabled by default for files marked with Mark of the Web (MotW)". Its stated fix, only "If you are confident in the safety of both the file and its source", is: "right-click the file in File Explorer, select Properties, and then select Unblock" — with a note that the change "might not take effect immediately but will be effective after the next login" ([*File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files downloaded from the internet*](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/os/windows/docs/2025/10/file-explorer-automatically-disables-the-preview-feature-for-files-downloaded-from-the-internet), KB5070960, read 28 September 2026). Our advice is the same as theirs in plainer words: unblock the statement your bank sent you, not the attachment from a stranger. For anything else, opening the file is still available.
## Mac: Quick Look and the Finder's Preview paneSelect a PDF in a Finder window and press the Space bar. Apple's guide says a Quick Look window opens and that "If you selected multiple items, the last item you selected is shown first", which makes it a quick way to flick through a handful of files; press the Space bar again to close it ([*View and edit files with Quick Look on Mac*](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mh14119/mac), read 28 September 2026).
For a preview that stays on screen while you click from file to file, use the Finder's Preview pane: "If you don’t see the Preview pane, choose View > Show Preview." Apple describes it as "a small view of what a document contains", alongside the file's details ([*Use the Preview pane in the Finder on Mac*](https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/mchl1e4644c2/mac), read 28 September 2026).
## iPhone: Quick Look from the Files appIn Files, Apple's steps are: "Touch and hold the file, tap Open With, then choose Preview with Quick Look" — and the same page says "You can preview an image file or a PDF in Quick Look" ([*Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iphe4bff8827/ios), read 28 September 2026). To see a whole folder at a glance, switch the folder to Icons rather than List: Apple's instruction is to tap the view button "then tap Icons or List to change your view of the files" ([*Modify files and folders in Files on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iphc61044c11/ios), read 28 September 2026). ## Android: Files by GoogleGoogle's help for Files by Google says "Under the Recents section, you can view your recently added, downloaded, and modified files", and "To change how the files display, tap Grid view" ([*View your files — Files by Google Help*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9765314?hl=en), read 28 September 2026). That page does not say whether grid view draws a PDF's first page or a generic icon; it is silent on thumbnails. Tapping a PDF opens it in the app itself — "You can directly open and edit PDF files in the Files by Google app" — and inside it you can swipe left or right to move to the previous or next file ([*Open, manage & edit PDFs in Files by Google*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/15949407?hl=en), read 28 September 2026). Other phone makers ship their own file apps, and their steps differ.
## What a preview can and cannot tell youA preview answers "what does this file look like?" — usually from the first page. The question it leaves open is "which of these forty files mentions the policy number?", because every method above shows you one file at a time and none of them searches the text for you.
