How do I put multiple PDFs together into one?

On a Mac, select the files in Finder and choose Quick Actions → Create PDF. On an iPhone, use Preview's "Insert from File". On Windows, use a PDF application such as Adobe Acrobat, whose help pages set out the steps. The two things that go wrong most often are page order and accidentally editing an original, and both are covered below.

Mac, the quickest way: Finder's Create PDF

Apple's steps: in a Finder window, "Select the files you want to combine into a PDF", then "Control-click the selected files, then choose Quick Actions > Create PDF." The new file is created "with a name similar to the first file you selected". Watch the order — Apple's note is that "The files appear in the PDF in the same order that you select them", so click them one by one in the order you want, rather than drag-selecting a block (Combine files into a PDF on Mac, read 28 September 2026).

Mac, with control over pages: Preview

Preview lets you pick individual pages as well as whole files. Open the PDFs, choose View > Thumbnails in each, and "Drag the thumbnails you want to add from the sidebar of one PDF to the sidebar of the other PDF"; to add an entire file, "drag the PDF icon from the Finder to the sidebar of an open document". Read Apple's warning first: "Changes you make to a Preview document are saved automatically. If you want to keep the original PDFs (in addition to the new combined one), choose File > Duplicate to create a copy of each PDF before combining them" (Combine PDFs in Preview on Mac, read 28 September 2026).

iPhone: Preview's Insert from File

Open the first PDF in the Preview app, tap the page count to show thumbnails, then "Touch and hold a thumbnail" and choose "Insert a PDF or image: Tap Insert from File." Pages can then be reordered by dragging a thumbnail "above or below another one" (Add, delete, rotate, move, or crop PDF pages in Preview on iPhone, read 28 September 2026). That page does not say whether the PDF you started from is kept as it was, so if you need the original, make a copy in Files first — Duplicate is one of the options when you touch and hold a file (Organize files and folders in Files on iPhone, read 28 September 2026).

Windows: a PDF app is needed

Microsoft's File Explorer guide covers opening, moving, sharing and viewing files, and has no command for combining PDFs (File Explorer in Windows, read 28 September 2026). So on a PC the job goes to a PDF application. Adobe's steps for Acrobat on the desktop: choose Combine files from the menu, "Select Add Files and select the files you want to combine", arrange them — "Drag and drop thumbnails to reorder pages", and use the bin icon to remove pages you do not want — then "Select Combine in the upper-right corner". Adobe adds that "Acrobat merges your selected files into a single PDF document", which you can rename and save where you like. Unlike the Apple tools above, Acrobat will also take "Word, Excel, PowerPoint, audio, video, or web files" into the same PDF (Combine files into one PDF — Adobe Acrobat Help, read 28 September 2026). That help page does not say which Acrobat plans include Combine files.

Android

Google's help page for PDFs in Files by Google lists opening, annotating, sharing, moving, printing and searching within a PDF, and nothing about joining two together (Open, manage & edit PDFs in Files by Google, read 28 September 2026). On an Android phone, that means a separate PDF app — and since you are giving it your documents, read what it does with them before you install it.

Before you merge a pile of PDFs

Merging is the right move when the result has to travel as one file — an application pack, a claim, a set of receipts for someone else. It is often the wrong move when you only wanted to find something across the files: a search inside one giant PDF lands you on page 214 with no idea which original document that page came from. In that case, keep the files separate and search across them instead.
