# How do I get my Android phone to read a PDF aloud? — DocFind

**Turn on Select to Speak in your phone's accessibility settings, open the PDF in any viewer, start Select to Speak with its shortcut, and tap Play to hear the page. It is part of Android's accessibility tools rather than a feature of one PDF app.** Two Google tools that sound more suitable, Reading mode and Play Books' Read Aloud, come with conditions that matter for PDFs, set out below.

## Select to Speak: the route that works in any viewer
Google describes it as a way to "select items on your screen and hear them read or described aloud". To switch it on, open Settings, tap Accessibility, then Select to Speak, and turn on the Select to Speak shortcut; if the option is missing, Google says to install the latest Android Accessibility Suite from Google Play. To use it, trigger the shortcut (Google gives a two-finger swipe up, or a three-finger swipe if TalkBack is on, or the Accessibility button), then tap one item, drag across several, or "To hear everything, tap Play." While it reads, the player lets you pause, skip forward or back, and change the speed. A setting called Read in background keeps it going while you scroll or switch apps ([*Use Select to Speak*, Android Accessibility Help](https://support.google.com/accessibility/android/answer/7349565?hl=en), read 15 October 2026).

Google notes that "Some of these steps work only on Android 11.0 and up", and a separate tip on the same page applies to browsers: "Select to Speak might not work with every mobile web browser." For a PDF opened from a link, saving it and opening it in a file manager's viewer avoids that question.

## For a paragraph or two: Read aloud on selected text
The same Google page describes a lighter option that does not need Select to Speak switched on: select the text, then in the pop-up menu tap More, then Read aloud. Google limits it to "text that can be read, like text from a web page", and to "web pages and applications that support selected texts" (the *Use Select to Speak* page above). In a PDF viewer that lets you select text, it is the quickest way to hear one passage.

## Scanned PDFs
A scanned PDF holds a picture of each page. Google's Select to Speak page does describe reading text with optical character recognition, but only for the camera: you point the Google Camera app at text and then start Select to Speak, and the feature is listed for 18 languages, from Catalan to Turkish, with English among them (the *Use Select to Speak* page above). The page does not say whether Select to Speak reads the text of a scanned page shown in a PDF viewer. If nothing is read, check whether the file has stored text at all; [telling whether a PDF has a text layer](https://docfindapp.com/answers/does-my-pdf-have-a-text-layer) takes a few seconds, and [making a scanned PDF searchable](https://docfindapp.com/answers/make-a-scanned-pdf-searchable) adds one.

## Why not Reading mode?
Google's Reading mode app has a play button that reads content aloud, with a choice of voice and speed. It is the obvious candidate, and Google rules it out for this job in so many words: "Reading mode currently doesn't support PDF files, emails, chat messages, and social media feeds." Google also says it needs Android 9 or later and "is only available on Android phones" ([*Use Reading mode*, Android Accessibility Help](https://support.google.com/accessibility/android/answer/13026948?hl=en), read 15 October 2026).

## Play Books, Chrome and TalkBack

**Play Books.** You can upload your own PDFs to Play Books, but its Read Aloud has a condition: "To use Read Aloud, view the ebook in flowing text mode" ([*Hear books read out loud on Google Play Books* (Android), Google Play Help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/11938821?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 15 October 2026). Google's reading guide describes Flowing text as the mode where you "Change display options like font, text size, and line spacing", next to Original pages, a fixed layout ([*Buy & read ebooks* (Android), Google Play Help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/185545?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 15 October 2026). Neither page says whether an uploaded PDF can be shown as flowing text, so Read Aloud on your own PDF is not something Google promises. The upload steps are on [whether Play Books can read PDFs](https://docfindapp.com/answers/can-google-play-books-read-pdf).

**Chrome.** Chrome on Android has Listen to this page under the More menu, with a choice of voice and speed, but Google says "This feature isn't available yet on all websites", and its page speaks of websites throughout without mentioning PDFs ([*Use Listen to this page mode in Chrome*, Google Chrome Help](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/14768725?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 15 October 2026). If the item is missing from the menu with a PDF open, Google's page explains why: the page "isn't available for playback".

**TalkBack.** Google calls TalkBack "the Google screen reader included on Android devices" which "gives you eyes-free control of your device" ([*Get started on Android with TalkBack*, Android Accessibility Help](https://support.google.com/accessibility/android/answer/6283677?hl=en), read 15 October 2026). It is built for using the whole phone without looking at it; for simply hearing a document, Select to Speak is the lighter choice, in our view.

## Voice and speed
Google's Play Books page says the app "uses your default text-to-speech app", and gives the path for changing that engine: Settings, Accessibility, Text-to-speech output, then the settings next to "Preferred engine" to install voice data for a language, and "Speech rate" to set the speed (the *Hear books read out loud* page above). If a PDF is in a language your phone does not read well, installing that language's voice there is the first thing to try.
