How do I find my documents in DigiLocker?
Last reviewed: October 16, 2026 · Markdown version
DigiLocker keeps documents in two places, and which one to open depends on who put the document there. Anything a government department or agency issued to you, such as your Aadhaar, a driving licence or a CBSE mark sheet, appears in Issued Documents; anything you uploaded yourself is in the section for uploaded documents, which DigiLocker's FAQ also calls DigiLocker Drive. If an issued document is not there yet, you fetch it from the department that issued it. Everything below comes from DigiLocker's own pages.
Issued or uploaded: the split that decides where to look
DigiLocker's FAQ defines the two kinds. Issued documents are "e-documents issued by various government agencies in electronic format directly from the original data source", and their links sit "in the issued documents section of DigiLocker". Uploaded documents "are those documents that are uploaded directly by the DigiLocker user". The same FAQ lists the account's main sections: Issued Documents "shows list of URIs (links) of digital documents or certificates issued by the Govt. departments or agencies integrated with DigiLocker"; DigiLocker Drive "shows all the documents which are uploaded by you"; and Browse Documents lists the departments registered as issuers, with the note that a document they have issued "will appear in the form of a URI (link) in your Issued Documents section" (Frequently Asked Questions, DigiLocker, read 16 October 2026).
The phone app holds the same account. DigiLocker's App Store description says "You can now access your documents and certificates from your DigiLocker on your mobile devices" (DigiLocker, App Store listing by National e-Governance Division, read 16 October 2026).
Three documents people look for most
- Aadhaar. With an Aadhaar-linked account, the FAQ's steps are to log in, "Go to the issued section where you will see your digital Aadhaar Card listed", then "click on the view/download option".
- CBSE certificates. After logging in, a student "should go to 'Issued Document' section of DigiLocker and you will see all your class X or XII certificates here". The FAQ says CBSE students got accounts created from the mobile number CBSE holds, with the last six digits of the roll number as the security PIN; anyone whose account was not created that way signs up and links Aadhaar.
- Driving licence and vehicle registration. These come from the National Register kept by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and the FAQ warns that "If your Driving License and Vehicle Registration Certificate record does not exist in the National Register, DigiLocker will not be able to get it for you". Your name in Aadhaar should also match the name in that register.
All three are from the FAQ page cited above.
When a document will not appear
The FAQ names the usual errors. For "The details provided did not match the issuer data", it says the message "can come if some of the details filled by you are incorrect" and to re-enter them. For a licence or registration the issuer cannot find, the cause above applies: no record in the National Register, nothing to fetch. And if Aadhaar will not link because it "is already registered", the FAQ's explanation is that the Aadhaar is already linked to a different DigiLocker account (all from the FAQ page above). Beyond that, DigiLocker's support site says "Users may write to helpdesk@negd.in" or submit a request online (DigiLocker Helpdesk, read 16 October 2026).
Finding a file you uploaded
Uploaded files are yours to name: the FAQ says you can "edit the name of the file using the edit icon next to the filename", that the file types accepted are "pdf, jpeg & png", and that the "Maximum allowed file size is 10MB". It also describes an Activity section that logs "file upload, download, share, etc.", which is a way to see when something went in. The FAQ does not describe a search box for finding a document by name or by the words inside it, so a clear file name at upload time is the thing that helps most later (the Frequently Asked Questions page, same page as above).
Copies you downloaded to the phone
If you download a document from DigiLocker to the phone, the FAQ does not say where the app saves it (the Frequently Asked Questions page, same page as above). On an iPhone, where downloaded PDFs go covers the usual places to look, and finding a document on your phone covers searching once it is there.
