Can Apple Notes find handwritten words when you search?

Last reviewed: October 21, 2026 · Markdown version

Yes, with a language condition. Apple's iPhone guide says that in Notes "you can search through all your notes for typed and handwritten text, objects in images, and text in scanned documents", and wherever it mentions handwriting it adds "(in supported languages)" (Search through your notes on iPhone, iPhone User Guide, read 21 October 2026). So a note you wrote with your finger can turn up when you type a word from it. Below is where to type, how to reach a PDF attached to a note, and the questions Apple's pages leave open.

Searching every note at once

Open Notes, tap the search button and type. Apple's list of what that box looks at runs to "tags, typed and handwritten text (in supported languages), objects that appear in images, and text in scanned documents". It also offers ready-made searches: you can "choose a suggested search, such as “Notes with Drawings,” then enter additional text to refine your search". One exception applies throughout: "If a note is locked, only its title appears in the search results" (the Search through your notes page above). If a handwritten note you know exists does not appear, check whether it is locked before anything else.

Inside one long note, or a PDF attached to it

For a single note, open it, tap the Note Actions button, then tap Find in Note. Apple's heading for this step names both kinds of writing ("Search within a note or attachment for typed and handwritten text"), and the step that reaches files is a setting: "To search PDFs and other attachments, select Include Attachments" (the Search through your notes page). Apple's PDF page for Notes says the same thing from the other side; under "Search in PDFs" it simply points back to that search page (Work with PDFs in Notes on iPhone, iPhone User Guide, read 21 October 2026).

Writing by hand on an iPhone

On iPhone the pen is your finger. Apple's drawing page begins: "Use the Notes app to draw a sketch or jot a handwritten note with your finger." It carries a small tip that helps search later: "If the note doesn’t have a title, the first line of handwritten text becomes the suggested title." Selected handwriting can also be turned into text, since you can "paste it as typed text in another note or app", with a condition: "Smart Selection and handwriting transcription work if the system language of your iPhone is set to a supported language in Settings > General > Language & Region > iPhone Language" (Add drawings and handwriting in Notes on iPhone, iPhone User Guide, read 21 October 2026).

Which languages count as supported

That drawing page sends you to Apple's feature availability website for the list. On that page, the entry for searchable handwriting is headed "Apple Pencil: Searchable Handwriting" and its languages include several kinds of English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Thai, Russian, Ukrainian and Vietnamese (iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability, Apple, read 21 October 2026). Hindi is not on it. The entry is written for Apple Pencil, and we found no separate entry on that page for handwriting typed with a finger on an iPhone, so Apple does not spell out the iPhone list as such. Our suggestion: write one line in your own language and search for it before you trust Notes with a term's worth of notes.

The same website has a separate entry, "Notes: Searchable Text in Images and Scans", for printed text in photos and scanned documents. Its list is shorter in places: it names Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Ukrainian among others, but not Arabic or Thai (the Feature Availability page above).

What Apple's pages do not say

The search page lists "handwritten text" and "text in scanned documents" as two separate things. It does not say whether handwriting that appears inside a scanned document, such as a photographed page of a paper notebook, is treated as handwriting, and it does not say whether marks you write over an attached PDF with Markup are searchable (the Search through your notes page, read 21 October 2026). Both are worth one test with a word you know is there.

Handwritten pages kept as PDFs outside Notes

If your notes are scanned into PDFs in the Files app rather than written in Notes, they are outside the search above. DocFind will not help with those either: it reads printed text, not handwriting, on both iPhone and Android, so a scanned notebook stays unsearchable there. Why handwriting is a harder problem, and what tends to work instead, is on our page about OCR and handwriting.
