**Not from Apple's own search boxes, as far as Apple documents them. The Files app on iPhone and iCloud Drive on iCloud.com both describe their search in the same terms: a filename, a folder name or a document type. Neither page says a word typed there is matched against the text inside a PDF** ([*Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-and-view-files-and-folders-iphe4bff8827/ios) and [*Find and view files and folders in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com*](https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/mmebf050837b/icloud), both read 20 October 2026). So iCloud Drive is good at finding a PDF you can name, and not documented for finding one by a sentence inside it. Here is exactly what each place offers.

## The Files app on iPhone
Your iCloud Drive lives inside the Files app: Apple's route is to open Files, tap Browse, then tap iCloud Drive below Locations ([*Set up iCloud Drive on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iphbbcf8827d/ios), read 20 October 2026). The search field at the top is described this way: "Enter a filename, folder name, or document type in the search field." You can narrow a search by tapping Recents or a location or tag below the field ([*Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-and-view-files-and-folders-iphe4bff8827/ios), read 20 October 2026). Typing "PDF" as the document type is a quick way to list your PDFs; it is not a way to search inside them.

## iCloud Drive on iCloud.com
Search on the web works differently from what you might expect. Apple's iCloud guide says that with iOS 26.4 or later on your iPhone, "you can have a trusted device provide search results for iCloud Drive on iCloud.com", using on-device processing, and that as you type "you see suggestions for filenames, folder names and document types", supplied by that device. The instruction that follows is the same as on the phone: "Enter a filename, folder name or the document type you’re looking for into the search field." The first time, you are asked to allow it from your trusted device ([*Find and view files and folders in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com*, iCloud User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/mmebf050837b/icloud), read 20 October 2026). That page, too, is silent on searching the contents of a file.

## Spotlight, the phone-wide search
Spotlight is the search you get by swiping down on the Home Screen. Apple says it can find "content in apps like Mail and Messages, and even text in your photos using Live Text", and adds a condition for everything else: "Content from third-party apps appears in search results only if the app supports Spotlight indexing" ([*Search with Spotlight on iPhone*, iPhone User Guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/search-on-iphone-iph3c511548/ios), read 20 October 2026). The page does not list PDFs in iCloud Drive among the things it searches by content, so we would not rely on it to find a clause in a contract.

## Inside one PDF, the answer is yes
Once a PDF is open, finding a word in it is easy: Apple's Preview app has a Find text in a PDF option on the same page that covers viewing ([*Open and view PDFs and images in Preview on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iph7a0cdad0c/ios), read 20 October 2026). That is one file at a time, and the steps for it are on [searching PDFs on iPhone](https://docfindapp.com/answers/search-pdfs-on-iphone). The gap is the step before: knowing which of forty PDFs holds the word.

## Making iCloud PDFs findable by name
Because Apple's search works on names, the simplest fix is a naming habit. Our suggestion: put the thing you will later search for into the file name when you save it, for example `2026-04 car insurance renewal.pdf`, and keep one folder per kind of document. If you are not sure which folder you are looking at, [the Files Browse screen](https://docfindapp.com/answers/where-is-the-files-folder-on-iphone) and [the Documents folder in iCloud Drive](https://docfindapp.com/answers/documents-folder-in-icloud-drive) explain the layout.

## Searching the words inside many of them
[DocFind](https://docfindapp.com/) searches inside many PDFs at once, with results that show the file, the page and the surrounding text; tap one to open that PDF at that exact page with your keywords highlighted. It is on iPhone and Android, and the index it builds stays on the phone: it is not a cloud service, and nothing is uploaded. On iPhone, a PDF in iCloud Drive has to be added to DocFind like any other file you import, and scanned pages are read for printed text, not handwriting. Search, indexing, OCR of scanned pages and export all work without an internet connection, and DocFind never uploads the documents you add.
