Can I search inside PDFs stored in OneDrive?

Probably, but Microsoft does not promise it for PDFs in so many words. The OneDrive app's own store listing says it can "Search docs by name or content"; Microsoft's current help page on finding files sends you to the search box on the OneDrive website and never mentions PDFs or file contents. So the honest answer is: try it with a word you know is only inside one of your PDFs (Find lost or missing files in OneDrive, Microsoft Support, read 20 October 2026). What Microsoft does and does not say is set out below, with a two-minute test.
What Microsoft says about OneDrive search
The clearest sentence is in the app's own listing, under a heading that just says Search: "Search docs by name or content" (Microsoft OneDrive, App Store listing by Microsoft Corporation, read 20 October 2026). It does not say which document types count as docs.
Microsoft's support page for finding files is more about where to look than what the search reads. Its advice is that "we recommend searching your OneDrive storage using the OneDrive website. It's where all your devices sync and store your files", and then to "Use Search everything at the top of the page to look for your files." Its tip for a personal account is to search beyond names: "don't just use filenames, search with descriptions, tags, dates and places, e.g. "cat", "sunny", "April" or "Paris"" (Find lost or missing files in OneDrive, Microsoft Support, read 20 October 2026). That page does not use the word PDF anywhere in its steps, and it does not say whether a search matches words inside a file.
One small finding worth knowing: Microsoft's older page on finding files in the OneDrive phone app now redirects to that same lost-files page, so there is no longer a separate mobile search guide to read.
Two things search will not show you
The same Microsoft page names both. "Files in your Personal Vault don't appear in search results", so a PDF you locked away there will look missing until you unlock the vault. And a file that never reached OneDrive cannot be found there: if "your device has not yet synced the file to OneDrive", Microsoft's suggestion is to "use the Files app to search for content on your mobile device" instead (the Find lost or missing files page above).
Work or school OneDrive
If your OneDrive comes from an employer or a university, the search behind it is run by your organisation's Microsoft 365 setup. Microsoft's technical reference for SharePoint in Microsoft 365 lists Portable Document Format, .pdf, among the file formats it is "enabled to parse" by default (Default crawled file name extensions and parsed file types in SharePoint Server, Microsoft Learn, read 20 October 2026). That page is written about SharePoint and does not mention OneDrive by name, so we read it as a strong hint for work accounts, not a statement about OneDrive.
A two-minute test
Our suggestion, not Microsoft's. Open one PDF you have in OneDrive and pick a word that appears inside it but not in its file name: a surname, a reference number, an unusual place. Type it into Search everything on onedrive.com, then into the search in the phone app.
- The PDF comes back in both: content search covers your PDFs.
- It comes back on the website only: search from the website, as Microsoft recommends.
- It comes back in neither: either content search does not reach that file, or the PDF holds no words to find. A scan is a picture of a page, and no search matches text that was never stored; checking for a text layer tells you which.
Google Drive, by contrast, does put a content search in writing; searching PDFs in Google Drive quotes it.
Searching OneDrive PDFs on the phone itself
DocFind on iPhone and Android does not connect to OneDrive or any other cloud account. A PDF you have downloaded from OneDrive to the phone can be added to it like any other, and from then on it searches inside many PDFs at once, with results that show the file, the page and the surrounding text. Scanned PDFs are read on the device first, for printed text rather than handwriting. Searching, indexing, reading scanned pages and exporting all work with no internet connection, and DocFind never uploads your documents. If a file has changed since it was indexed, DocFind tells you which one.
