# What is the default PDF reader on Android, and how do I change it? — DocFind

**There is no single Android PDF reader. A phone opens a PDF with whichever app was chosen as the default for that job, and if nothing has been chosen, it asks you. You can change that choice, or wipe it so the phone asks again, from Settings.** Below is the mechanism as Google and Samsung document it, plus one honest gap: neither company's pages that we read say which app a new phone uses for PDFs out of the box.

## How the choice gets made: Always or Just once
Google's Pixel help describes the prompt you see when several apps can open the same thing: "If your phone or tablet asks which app to use, tap the app you want." Then comes the decision that sticks: "To choose how often you want to use the app for this action, tap Always or Just once." Pick *Always* and "Your device won't ask which app to use anymore"; pick *Just once* and "Your device uses the app just once" ([*Set or clear default apps on your Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet*, Pixel Phone Help](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/6271667?hl=en), read 3 October 2026). That is how most people end up with a default they never meant to set: one tap on Always, months ago.

## Change or clear it on a Pixel
From the same page, to pick a default at any time: open Settings, tap Apps, then Default apps, tap the default you want to change, and tap the app you want instead. To undo a choice: Settings, Apps, tap the app that is currently opening your PDFs (tap "See all apps" if it is not listed), then Open by default and Clear default preferences. Google's promise for afterwards: "when you take that action again, your device will ask you which app to use." Google also warns that "Some of these steps only work on Android 14 and up", so older phones may label things differently.

## On a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung Australia's guide, written for the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Fold6, gives the short route: "Head into your Settings and tap on Apps", then "Select Choose default apps", choose the one to change and select your preferred application ([*How to set Default Apps on my Galaxy Phone*, Samsung Australia](https://www.samsung.com/au/support/mobile-devices/set-default-apps/), read 3 October 2026). Samsung Malaysia's page explains the rule behind it, that "only one app can be the default app that opens up when you launch a file type or protocol on your device", and lists the steps for clearing one: Settings, Apps, the app you want to clear, then "Set as default". It notes the screens "maybe varies from different android version" ([*How to clear and change default apps on Android?*, Samsung Malaysia](https://www.samsung.com/my/support/mobile-devices/how-to-clear-and-change-default-apps-on-android/), read 3 October 2026).

## So which app is the default out of the box?
None of the three pages above names the app that opens PDFs on a new Pixel or a new Galaxy; they describe the mechanism and stop. What Google does document is two of its own apps that can open them. Files by Google says "You can directly open and edit PDF files in the Files by Google app", and inside an open PDF its More menu offers "Open with: Open the PDF in a different app" ([*Open, manage & edit PDFs in Files by Google*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/15949407?hl=en), read 3 October 2026). Chrome opens PDF links itself on Android 12 and up ("You don’t need to download the PDF or use a PDF reader"), and its More, then Open with... route hands the file to another viewer, where you may be asked to "select Just Once or Always Open" ([*Manage PDFs in Chrome*, Google Chrome Help, Android](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/16215622?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 3 October 2026).

The quickest way to find out what your own phone does is to test it: open a PDF from your file manager. If you are asked to choose, there is no default yet. If it opens straight into an app, that app is the default, and the clearing steps above are how you change it.

## Picking the app to make default
That depends on what you do with PDFs. Most people only read them, and the viewer already on the phone is enough; annotating or editing points elsewhere.
