Where are my PDF files stored?

A PDF on a phone is in one of about five places, and the reason it feels lost is that nothing shows you all five at once.

The five places

Downloads. Where the browser puts things. Apple documents the iPhone route: "Go to the Files app", "Tap Browse", "Tap the Downloads folder to see your downloaded files", with the note that if you cannot see the folder, "tap iCloud Drive" (Find your downloaded files on iPhone, read 23 September 2026). On Android, Chrome's help says "To find all the files that you've downloaded to your device, open the Files app" (Download a file, Chrome Help, Android, read 23 September 2026).
Inside an app. A PDF received in a chat app, or saved into a note, may exist only inside that app's own storage and never appear in a file browser at all.
In the cloud. On iPhone, Apple's Files app lists iCloud Drive and, under their own names, "third-party cloud services that you've added to the Files app, such as Box, Dropbox, and OneDrive" (Find files on your iPhone or iPad, read 23 September 2026). Listed there is not the same as stored on the phone — see below.
In email. Still an attachment, never saved — easy to forget because it never shows up anywhere a file browser looks.
On the computer. If that is where your archive lives, no search on the phone will find it.

"On the device" and "visible in Files" are different things

A name in a cloud location tells you the file exists in that account; it does not by itself tell you the file's contents are on the phone right now. Apple's iPhone pages quoted above do not describe how a cloud file that has not been downloaded is shown, so do not rely on the list alone. Anything that needs to read the contents — including searching them — needs the real file present, not the name.

The practical test is to turn off the network and try to open it. If it opens, it is there.

Why "it is in Files" is only half an answer

The question people usually have is not "where is statement.pdf" but "which of these documents mentions the boiler", and the two platforms' file apps answer it differently.

iPhone. Apple's own article says "To search for a file name, use the search field in the Files app" (article 102570 above). It does not say that search reads the text inside a PDF.
Android. Files by Google has a Smart Search that works from "Text from images and .pdf", scanned on the device — but Google also says it is not available on every device yet, and with it off "you can only use text from file names to search for files" (Search for a file, Files by Google Help, read 23 September 2026). Google's page describes it finding the file; it does not say a result shows you the page or the sentence.

Getting them into one place first

Any search across a library is only as good as the library. Before searching, it is worth pulling scattered PDFs into a single folder — the ones in chat apps, the attachments still sitting in email — because a document that is in five places is a document nothing can index reliably.

Where DocFind fits
