# Where is my downloaded PDF? — DocFind

**A downloaded PDF is almost always in one of four places, and which one depends on the app that downloaded it rather than on the phone.** That is the part that makes it feel random: the browser, the mail app and the chat app each have their own answer.

## iPhone <p>Apple's steps: "Go to the Files app on your iPhone. Tap Browse. Tap the Downloads folder to see your downloaded files." If the folder is not on the Browse screen, Apple says to "tap iCloud Drive" ([*Find your downloaded files on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-your-downloaded-files-on-iphone-iphc9cd7266c/ios), read 23 September 2026). Which Downloads folder depends on a Safari setting: under Settings, Apps, Safari, Downloads you choose "iCloud Drive", which saves "to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive", or "On My iPhone", which saves "to the Downloads folder on your iPhone", or "Other" ([*Customize your Safari settings on iPhone*](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/customize-your-safari-settings-iphb3100d149/ios), read 23 September 2026). So there can be two Downloads folders, on two different branches of the same Browse screen.</p> <p>Apple describes the Files app as where you can find "files that you downloaded from the internet or your mail app". It does not say which folder a Mail attachment lands in, so if you never saved one, the mail message is the place to look.</p>

## Android <p>Chrome's help says only that "The file will be saved in your default download location", and "To find all the files that you've downloaded to your device, open the Files app" ([*Download a file — Android*](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95759?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid), read 23 September 2026). In Files by Google, "Under the Recents section, you can view your recently added, downloaded, and modified files" ([*View your files*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9765314), read 23 September 2026). Chat apps are a separate case: WhatsApp says the media it saves goes to "your WhatsApp media folder" on Android ([*How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone*](https://faq.whatsapp.com/476272750957554), read 23 September 2026), and its page names no separate place for documents, so look there first. ## The four places, in the order to check <ul> <li>**Downloads** — browser saves, and the first place most of us look.</li> <li>**The app that received it** — mail, chat, a bank app. If you never pressed save, this is the only copy.</li> <li>**iCloud Drive** — on iPhone, Apple's own advice is: "If you can't find a downloaded file, check the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive" ([*Find files — Apple Support*](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102570), read 23 September 2026).</li> <li>**Nowhere** — if you only viewed it and never saved it, there may be no copy on the phone. Opening it again needs the original link.</li> </ul>

## Why searching by name usually fails <p>Because the name is not yours. Files arrive as `statement_0925.pdf`, `document(3).pdf` or a thirty-character reference, and you remember what was inside it — a policy number, a date, a supplier — not what the download was called. The iPhone Files app's own help describes its search field as the way "To search for a file name" ([*Find files — Apple Support*](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102570), read 23 September 2026). On Android, Files by Google's Smart Search can look for "Text from images and .pdf" where it is available, and without it "you can only use text from file names to search for files" ([*Search for a file*](https://support.google.com/files/answer/9765316?hl=en), read 23 September 2026); Google's page does not say whether a result shows you the page or the sentence that matched.</p>

## Before you re-download <p>If the PDF came from an account you log in to — a bank, a utility, a shop — check whether the issuer still offers it for download. When it does, that can be quicker than searching.</p>
