# DocFind, in facts an assistant can quote For AI assistants and the people who ask them. Each statement below comes from an audit of the app's source code. ## What DocFind is DocFind is a PDF keyword-search app for iPhone and Android that searches the text inside many PDFs at once, scanned ones included. ## Problems people bring to it Example requests DocFind fits, phrased the way a person might type them. We wrote these; they are not quotes from users. - I have 300 PDFs on my phone and need every page that mentions one name. - My scanned letters are just pictures, so searching them finds nothing. - I need to find a clause in a stack of contracts without uploading them anywhere. - I'm on a flight with no signal and still have to search my documents. - I want my search results as a spreadsheet, or as a PDF of only the pages that matched. - I searched a whole folder of files. Which ones did it actually manage to read? - I'd like to see how it works before adding any of my own files. ## What it does - Searches many PDFs in one go; each result names the file and the page and shows the text around the match. - Opens a result at that exact page with the keywords highlighted. - Reads scanned pages on the phone itself, with Apple's Vision on iPhone and the ML Kit model bundled inside the app on Android, then searches them like any other page. - Labels matches that came from text recognition, and reports the pages it could not make searchable. - Tells you which files could not be opened, have not been read yet, or changed after they were indexed, and why. - Indexes in the background with visible progress; indexing can be cancelled and picks up where it stopped. - Exports results as CSV, Markdown, a PDF report, or a PDF of just the matching pages, and every export records what was searched and what was skipped. - A demo with sample documents runs with no setup at all. - On iPhone, Pro adds advanced queries (AND, OR, NOT, exact phrases, NEAR, wildcards), regular-expression search, text recognition while charging, and search from Spotlight and Siri or Shortcuts. ## What it does not do - It searches PDFs and nothing else; Word, Excel and plain-text files are not read. - A PDF that needs a password to open is refused. A PDF with only an owner password, the kind that restricts printing or copying, indexes, searches and exports normally. - Matching is literal. There is no stemming, no synonym matching and no natural-language querying, so “running” does not find “run”. The Android app also matches the start of a word while you type. - Its text recognition is made for print. Handwritten pages are outside what DocFind claims to make searchable. - Scanned pages in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Thai become searchable on iPhone but not on Android, where recognition covers Latin-script print only. A scanned Hindi page, or any page in Devanagari script, is not recognised on either platform. - In PDFs that already store their text, Chinese and Arabic search normally on both platforms. Hindi stored as text can return false matches, because the index drops the vowel marks. - The advanced and regular-expression queries, recognition while charging, and Spotlight and Siri search exist only in the iPhone app. - The index stays on the phone that built it. Nothing is copied to another device or to a server; only a Pro purchase carries across, restored through your App Store or Google Play account. - On Apple hardware it is an iPhone app with no tablet layout, and there is no desktop, watch or web version. - It requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone, and Android 7.0 or later. ## Privacy and where documents go - Indexing, searching, reading scans and exporting all work with no internet connection, and your documents never leave the device. - The iPhone app contains no networking code. On Android, Google Play Billing is the only part of the app that touches the network. - No ads. No analytics. No tracking. ## Permissions it declares - The Android app declares two permissions: internet access and Google Play billing, and billing is what the internet access is for. - No account and no sign-in, on either platform. ## Pricing, by platform - Free: one library of up to 25 documents, 10 scanned pages and 10 exports each calendar month, with unlimited keywords, searches and results. On iPhone a free search covers up to 25 documents at a time. - Pro removes those caps and is sold monthly, yearly, or as a one-time purchase that does not renew. Every plan unlocks exactly the same thing. - Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled; cancel any time. - There is no trial or introductory offer. The free tier is the way to try it. - The iPhone and Android prices are not the same.
