Can OCR read a Hindi PDF?

It depends entirely on the engine, and the published lists disagree. Google lists Hindi for the OCR in Google Drive and in its ML Kit library; Apple's Live Text list has English (India) but no Hindi; the two Acrobat help pages on OCR and languages name no Indian script at all. DocFind cannot read scanned Hindi on either phone. So before you trust any app with a Hindi scan, check its own language list, then test a page.
Google Drive: Hindi is on the list
Drive turns a PDF or image into an editable Google Doc when you right-click it and choose Open with, then Google Docs, and Google says "Google Drive detects the language of the document." Its supported-languages list on the same page includes Hindi (Convert PDF and photo files to text, Google Drive Help, read 20 October 2026). The same page sets limits that matter for a long Hindi document: the file "should be 2 MB or smaller", text "should be at least 10 pixels high", and "Lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes are not likely to be detected". The result is a new document you have to read through, not a searchable copy of the original PDF; OCR in Google Drive covers that route in full.
Google ML Kit: a separate Devanagari model
ML Kit is the text-recognition library many Android apps build on. Google's language page lists Hindi, code hi, among its "Supported" languages, with the note "Deva; supported in v2", and says support for "Chinese, Devanagari, Japanese and Korean scripts is only available in Text Recognition v2" (Text recognition v2: supported languages, ML Kit, read 20 October 2026). The Android setup page shows why an app may still not read Hindi: Devanagari is its own library, text-recognition-devanagari, which a developer has to add on purpose beside the default Latin one (Recognize text in images with ML Kit on Android, read 20 October 2026). An app built on ML Kit reads Hindi only if its maker included that library.
iPhone Live Text: no Hindi listed
Live Text is the built-in iPhone feature that picks text out of photos and the camera view. Apple's own iPhone guide notes that "Live Text isn’t available in all regions or languages" (Use Live Text with your iPhone camera, iPhone User Guide, read 20 October 2026), and its feature-availability page gives the list. That list includes English (India), Thai, Japanese, Korean and both forms of Chinese, among others, and does not include Hindi or any other language written in Devanagari (iOS Feature Availability, Apple, read 20 October 2026).
Adobe Acrobat: no Indian script named
Acrobat's OCR asks you to "select the page range and language for text recognition", but its help page on recognising text does not list the languages (Recognize text in scanned documents, Adobe Acrobat Help, read 20 October 2026). Its language-support page names Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean, says "Acrobat supports Thai and Vietnamese text", and adds Arabic and Hebrew on Windows; Hindi and Devanagari do not appear on it (Asian, European, and Middle Eastern language support, Adobe Acrobat Help, read 20 October 2026). So for Acrobat, open the OCR dialog and look at its language menu before buying anything for a Hindi job.
What DocFind does with Hindi
We would rather say this plainly than leave you to find it out. DocFind reads scanned pages on the phone, with Apple's Vision framework on iPhone and Google's bundled Latin-script ML Kit model on Android, and neither recognises Devanagari as DocFind uses it. A scanned Hindi page does not become searchable in DocFind on iPhone or on Android. A PDF that already holds Hindi as text is not reliable either: the index keeps the consonants and drops the vowel signs, so a search for one Hindi word can return a different word. By contrast, a PDF that holds Chinese or Arabic as text searches normally on both platforms, and a scanned Chinese or Arabic page becomes searchable on iPhone but not on Android.
Before you trust any engine with a Hindi scan
- Read the engine's own language list, not the app's marketing page. A list that names English (India) is about English.
- Test one page with conjuncts and matras, the marks that sit above and below the line, because those are where a weak engine slips. Our suggestion, not a vendor's.
- Search for a word you can see after OCR, rather than only reading the output; a misread page fails quietly, as the OCR basics page explains.
