Why won't my PDF preview?

Last reviewed: October 3, 2026 · Markdown version

A preview is a lightweight viewer built into a mail app, a cloud drive, a browser or a file manager, and each one has its own reasons for refusing a file. Usually the fix is to download the PDF and open it in a full reader. When that fails too, the file itself is the problem: locked with a password, damaged, or not a PDF at all. Here is what Google and Apple document for the places people most often hit a blank preview.

In Gmail

Google's attachment page groups opening, previewing and downloading problems together. If attachments won't upload or download, it says to try, in order: check "that you're using a supported browser", try "turning off extensions you have on your browser one at a time", and clear the browser's cache and cookies. Two cases are by design: "If the sender turned on confidential mode, you won't be able to copy or download the message text and attachments", and some files are flagged as suspicious, including documents "that require a password to open", which "are encrypted and can't be scanned for viruses" (Open & download attachments in Gmail, Gmail Help, read 3 October 2026). That page says nothing about whether such a password-protected PDF will preview, only that Gmail warns about it; downloading it and opening it with the password is the reliable route.

In Google Drive

PDF is on Drive's list of the most common file types you can preview, with a caveat worth knowing: "The Google Drive preview is a scaled-down version of the complete file and may, when opened, appear slightly different" (Files you can store in Google Drive, read 3 October 2026). That list names "Password-protected Microsoft Office files" among previewable types but says nothing about password-protected PDFs, and it gives no file-size limit for previews. Drive also lets you choose how PDFs open: "Open PDFs in a new tab" or "Open PDFs in preview mode in the same tab", set in Drive's Settings (View & open files, Google Drive Help, read 3 October 2026). If the in-page preview misbehaves, switching to the new-tab option hands the file to the browser's own viewer instead.

In Chrome on Android

Two conditions from Google's page. First, "your device must run Android 12 and up" to use Chrome's PDF features. Second, "You can’t open a PDF with Chrome while in Incognito mode. You’ll get a prompt to download the file when in Incognito mode" (Manage PDFs in Chrome, Google Chrome Help, Android, read 3 October 2026). So a PDF link that "won't open" in a private tab is behaving as documented; download it, or open the link in a normal tab.

In the Files app on iPhone

Apple's preview is Quick Look: "You can preview an image file or a PDF in Quick Look", reached by touching and holding the file, then Open With and "Preview with Quick Look". Apple also notes that "If you haven’t installed the app that created a file, a preview of the file opens in Quick Look" (Find and view files and folders in Files on iPhone, read 3 October 2026). That page lists no reasons a Quick Look preview can fail. If the file sits in a cloud location, make sure it is actually on the phone first; how to keep a copy local.

When no viewer will open it

None of the pages above covers this, so this is our own checklist rather than a vendor's:

  • A user password. A PDF locked with a user password, the one needed to open it, shows nothing until that password is entered, and a preview pane often has nowhere to type it. Open it in a full reader. An owner password is a different thing, and our page on password-protected PDFs explains what each kind does and does not block.
  • An incomplete download. If a download was interrupted, the file can have the right name and a broken inside. Download it again from the source.
  • Not really a PDF. A file renamed to end in .pdf is still whatever it was before. If it came from a converter or a form, ask the sender for a fresh export.

And if the preview works but search inside it finds nothing, that is a different problem: why PDF search misses words you can see. Previews on a computer have their own quirks, covered here.
