Can I search inside PDFs in Dropbox?

Yes, if your Dropbox plan includes full-text search. Dropbox lists .pdf among the file types whose contents it searches, and each result shows "A text snippet … to show where in the file the keyword is located." On a plan without it, search matches file names, tags and the people a file was shared with, not the words inside. Dropbox's own pages do not quite agree on which plans qualify, so check yours with the test at the end.
What full-text search does
Dropbox's page on it: "Full-text search allows you to search the contents of your files in Dropbox. When you search your Dropbox files for a keyword, the results will include any files that contain that keyword as well as any files with that keyword in the name." Its steps are on dropbox.com: click the search bar at the top and start typing, and "A text snippet will appear below each search result to show where in the file the keyword is located." The supported list runs from .doc to .xlsx and includes .pdf (How to search the contents of your Dropbox files, Dropbox Help, read 20 October 2026).
Two limits on the same page. Language: "full-text search is only available in certain languages. If your search results only include files and folders with your keyword in the name, then the feature isn't available in your language." And the page names no list of those languages. Plan: it opens by saying "Full-text search is only available on Dropbox Professional, Essentials, Standard, Business, Advanced, Business Plus, and Enterprise."
Which plans: Dropbox's two pages differ
Dropbox's general search page gives a different list for the same feature. It says search covers "File contents (Dropbox Plus, Family, Professional, Standard, Business, Advanced, Business Plus, and Enterprise customers only)" (Search your Dropbox files, Dropbox Help, read 20 October 2026). So one page includes Plus and Family and leaves out Essentials, and the other does the reverse. The content-search page was last updated in February 2024 and the general one in August 2024, but neither says it replaces the other. If you are on Plus, Family or Essentials, run the test below before relying on it.
The general page has two more details worth having: the search "isn’t case-sensitive, and may auto-correct search queries to find a better match", and on dropbox.com you can narrow results with a Type filter that includes PDFs, or the type: operator (the same page).
Scanned PDFs
A scan holds a picture of each page, so the question is whether Dropbox reads text in pictures. Its search page lists that as a separate, opt-in feature: "OCR (Optical character recognition) - text within images (Dropbox Professional, Essentials, Standard, Business, Advanced, Business Plus, and Enterprise customers can opt-in)" (the Search your Dropbox files page). Dropbox's image-search page covers .gif, .jpg, .jpeg and .png files (How to search images in Dropbox, Dropbox Help, read 20 October 2026). None of the three pages says whether that OCR reads the page images inside a scanned PDF, so treat a miss on a scan as unknown rather than proof the word is absent. Making a scanned PDF searchable before you upload it removes the question.
On the phone app
Dropbox's mobile steps are: open the app, tap Search all Dropbox at the top, type, and tap Search or wait for the results (the Search your Dropbox files page). The full-text page gives its steps for dropbox.com only, and does not say whether content matches and snippets appear the same way in the app.
The test
Our suggestion: take a PDF you know holds a typed, unusual word that is not in its file name, and search for it on dropbox.com. If the PDF comes back with a snippet, full-text search covers your plan and language. If only files with the word in their names come back, it does not, and Dropbox's own wording says to read that as the feature being unavailable to you.
Searching PDFs you keep on the phone
If you would rather search PDFs without a cloud account doing the reading, DocFind on iPhone and Android searches inside many PDFs at once on the device, with results that show the file, the page and the surrounding text, scanned pages included. It does not connect to Dropbox; a PDF you download from Dropbox to the phone can be added like any other. None of that needs a connection: searching, indexing, reading scanned pages and exporting all run offline, and the PDFs stay on your phone. It reads PDFs only, and it reads printed text in scans, not handwriting.
