Where are WhatsApp documents stored?

On Android they are real files in a real folder; on iPhone they mostly are not files at all. That asymmetry is why the same question gets two incompatible answers online.

Android

WhatsApp states it plainly: "On Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp media folder. If you have internal storage, the WhatsApp folder is located in your internal storage. If you don't have internal storage, the folder will be on your SD card or external SD card" (How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone, read 23 September 2026).

What the page does not say is where documents go inside that media folder: the only sub-folder it names is Images/WhatsApp Images/, in its .nomedia instructions. Open the WhatsApp folder in a file manager and look, rather than trusting a path from an older guide.

iPhone

WhatsApp's iPhone page covers pictures, video and audio only: "WhatsApp automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone. Save to Photos is turned on by default" (How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone — iPhone, read 23 September 2026). It does not say where a document goes on an iPhone, so until you share a file out to the Files app yourself, the conversation is where it lives.

The setting that decides all of this

WhatsApp saves incoming media automatically by default: "WhatsApp automatically saves audio, video and photos sent to your phone. The Media visibility option is turned on by default." It can be switched off for everything in Settings > Chats, or per conversation — "Tap Media visibility > No > OK" from a chat's info screen.

One note WhatsApp adds that catches people out: "Changing this setting won't affect any previous auto-download choices you've made for specific chats or groups." Turning it off globally does not override a per-chat setting you made earlier.

A document you were sent months ago

Chat search finds the message if you remember a word from the message. WhatsApp's help describes finding documents by type in search, and says nothing about searching the words inside one (How to free up storage on WhatsApp, read 23 September 2026), so a PDF sent with no comment — which is how most documents arrive — is findable only by scrolling to roughly the right week. On Android the file is at least on the phone and a file manager will list it, under whatever name the sender gave it. Files by Google also has a Smart Search that can look for "Text from images and .pdf", though Google adds that if it still cannot find files by their content, "Smart Search isn't available for your device yet" (Search for a file, read 23 September 2026).

Why they pile up unnoticed

Because nobody chose to save them. Where automatic download is switched on for documents, an attachment can land on the phone whether or not you opened it — WhatsApp says "You can set WhatsApp to automatically download photos, voice messages, videos, and documents when using mobile data, Wi-Fi, and when roaming" (How to configure auto-download, read 23 September 2026) and the documents folder fills with invoices, tickets, forwarded forms and other people's paperwork. The other four places PDFs end up.
