Where do I find the invoice number?

On a full invoice it has to be there: UK, EU and Indian rules all require a unique number on one. In our experience it sits near the top, beside the invoice date, under a label such as "Invoice No." or "Invoice #". If what you are holding has no such number, it may be a receipt, an order confirmation or a simplified invoice rather than a full one — which is allowed, and explained below.

Why it is always there on a full invoice

Tax and trading rules require it, and they describe what it is:

UK, any business invoice. GOV.UK lists "a unique identification number" first among what an invoice must include (Invoices — what they must include, read 27 September 2026).
UK VAT invoices. The VAT guide asks for "a sequential number based on one or more series which uniquely identifies the document" (VAT guide (VAT Notice 700), section 16.3, read 27 September 2026).
EU VAT invoices. The European Commission's list for a full invoice includes a "Unique sequential number identifying the invoice" (Invoicing — Taxation and Customs Union, read 27 September 2026).
India, GST tax invoices. Rule 46 of the CGST Rules requires "a consecutive serial number not exceeding sixteen characters, in one or multiple series", which may contain letters, numbers, hyphens and slashes, and must be "unique for a financial year" (Rule 46 — Tax invoice, read 27 September 2026).

That last rule is why a number such as INV/25-26/0147 is a valid Indian invoice number: letters, slashes and hyphens are all allowed, as long as the number is not repeated within the financial year.

When there is no number

Three common reasons. First, a receipt is not an invoice: GOV.UK says "An invoice is not the same as a receipt, which is an acknowledgement of payment" (Invoicing and taking payment from customers, read 27 September 2026).

Second, a simplified invoice can leave it out. In the UK a business may issue one when "the value of the supply you are making is £250 or less" and the customer agrees, and the list of what it must include has no invoice number on it (VAT Notice 700, section 16.6.1, read 27 September 2026). The Commission's table is the same shape: the sequential number is listed for a full invoice and left blank for a simplified one (the Invoicing page cited above).

Third, you may be looking at an order confirmation, which carries an order number, rather than the invoice itself. Where each platform keeps the invoice differs — our guides for PayPal, eBay, Apple and GoDaddy show where each one keeps it.

Finding one number in a pile of invoices

The other version of this question is the reverse: you have the number from a bank statement or a supplier's reminder, and a folder of invoice PDFs. DocFind searches inside many PDFs at once, and results show the file, the page, and the surrounding text, so you can see which invoice carries the number before opening anything. Scanned invoices are read on your device first. It reads PDFs only. One search habit that helps with any tool: if the full number with its prefix finds nothing, try the digits alone, since invoices print separators differently.
